Objectives: MEEI’s challenge was to create a comprehensive training program to simulate the complex and detailed procedures involved in cataract surgery realistically. Such training will provide residents with opportunity to develop their skills in a virtual environment, gaining valuable experience to supplement their actual surgical training.

Results: Gnaritas is working with MEEI to design and develop an interactive e-learning program to support resident training in cataract surgery. The instructional design of the Mass. Eye and Ear Cataract Master allows the resident to work through the program at his or her own pace, choosing specific actions to complete the surgery and viewing detailed animations of their results. The resident receives immediate, expert tutoring after making a mistake and can research and repeat actions as the surgery progresses.  A comprehensive reference system, which includes video clips of interviews with distinguished ophthalmology faculty and surgeons, allows the resident to learn more about the key aspects of this type of operation and the associated surgical techniques and procedures.
